Strong Bolton Captains team unable to regain Challenge Trophy against Bury Captains
Bolton Captains vs Bury Captains on 30th August at Walmersley GC.
Once again a hugely enjoyable and closely fought inter-society match against Bury Golf Captains, saw some familiar Bolton Captains faces playing for both teams, including some of the 2019 Captains! A blustery day proved perfect for the windmill on the nearby farm, but tricky for the golfers on a well presented and challenging course.
It was day for an experienced match-player, as shown by our early Horwich due of Derek Makin and Sam Brown, who secured a early victory and early chance to visit the club house. Despite good wins from them and the Dunscar duo of John Howard and Martin Tuck, the Bury Captains proved too strong for us on the day, and Bury ultimately won the match and retained the Challenge Trophy.
Full details of all the matches were available in dicussion in the bar area, whilst the last match went down to the last hole, with Brian Lee and Patrick Lydon refusing the give up the fight. They joined the rest of the teams in the clubhouse for an excellent meal and hosting by Walmersley catering staff and the Bury team.
This left our Captain, Ian Brooks, at the end of the formalities to hand over the Challenge Trophy to the Captain of the Bury Society, Clive Varley and congratulate him, his President Bryan Knowles and their team, on a hard fought victory.
We look forward to changing our fortunes in the matches planned for 2020 and bringing the silver and glassware back to Bolton.
Bolton Captains team relinquish Harken Trophy
Bolton Captains vs Manchester Captains 1st August at Whitefield GC.
A bright and breezy start to greeted the players in the annual inter-society match between Bolton Captains and Manchester Captains, this year hosted by Manchester at Whitefield Golf Club.
High quality golf by both sides and close matches played in the normal excellent spirit ensued throughout the day. With hardly any good-natured banter with players who regularly players who represented both societies in matches through the year.
The weather proved to be changeable, but the course continued to be a credit to the club, proving a good test of golf all day. The strong Bolton Captains team led by President Geoff Bassil, Captain Ian Brooks, had representives from almost all of the Bolton clubs.
Despite the quality of our players and much effort by the Bolton Captains on the day, Manchester prevailed, and regained the Harken Trophy. The hand-over ceremony followed wonderful hosting by the Manchester team, and lovely food by Whitefield GC, and required our Captain, only slightly grudgingly, to pass the Trophy to The Manchester Captain, and long time golfing colleague, Daniel Stone.
Pictures of the matches are below. If you want a higher resolution version please email firstname.lastname@example.org
Match 6 nearly started with Manchester at a dis-advantage as the always busy Ian Hales was hard to spot on the first team photo. Is he hiding behind the tree? Oh here he is now......
2019 Ken Jones Trophy Competition
Regent Park Golf Club Friday 26th July 2019.
Congratulations to Bob Ashworth from Westhoughton and Paul Bartle from Regent Park on their victory in this year's Ken Jones Trophies Competition with an excellent 48 points at Regent Park GC. They are pictured right receiving their well deserved trophy from our President and Captain. In a closely fought competition Bob and Paul won on a card play-off over the last 6 holes from second placed Eric Barnes from Regent Park and Stephen Hazlitt of Bolton Old Links who also had 48 points.
31 Captains enjoyed an extremely well presented Regent Park course, testament to the hard work by Mark Latham and his greenkeeping team. Smooth greens and good fairways helped towards some quality golf and great scores with many teams achieving 40+ points. The forecasted rain and thunder showers never appeared and the competitors enjoyed a warm and dry day with very little breeze. The long par 3's at Regent Park proved a tougher test, and gave up only two 2's. Well done to Peter Smith and Patrick Lydon on their accuracy and good putting in achieving those. The catering team provided a delicious and generous carvery and desserts to accompany the tales of the day of putts missed and holed and the inevitable good humoured banter in the clubhouse.
